Depression and Anxiety Related to Tooth Loss

Losing a tooth doesn't just affect your looks, ability to chew, and other physical characteristics. It may also affect your mental health.

A recent study suggested that those who had dental anxiety, skipped their visits to the dentist, and then had resulting poor dental health or tooth loss may become depressed. Put more simply, researchers found that the loss of teeth was a significant contributor to depression and/or anxiety.

More than 75,000 people were included in the study, with proportional distribution among men and women, age 19 or older.

These findings in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey on tooth loss, depression and anxiety were presented at the Annual Meeting and Exhibition of the American Association for Dental Research.
