Don't wear dentures during sleep. That is the conclusion of a recent study that suggests that doing doing so could double the risk of pneumonia in the very elderly.
The study followed over 500 individuals aged 87 and over for three years. Those who wore their dentures while sleeping had more than twice the risk of pneumonia versus those who did not sleep in their dentures at night.
The researchers also found that wearing dentures during sleep was related to oral inflammation and increased bacterial presence.
The implications are relatively straightforward: Those with dentures should remove them before going to sleep at night.
The study was published in the Journal of Dental Research.
