If you want your child to have healthy teeth, the time to start down that path is while you are still pregnant.
Recent research suggests that mothers who had a higher level of vitamin D while pregnant had children with a lower incidence of dental caries, commonly referred to as cavities.
The researchers, who studied more than 1200 mothers, found that the mothers' nutrition affected the development of the child both prior to and after birth. This includes the formation and the mineralization of the children's teeth. As a result, higher vitamin D intake during pregnancy was associated with reduced risk of cavities in young children.
The study was published in the Annals of Epidemiology.
